The Successful Interview: Preparing for the Interview

Interviewing may seem a bit overwhelming, but the key to a successful interview is to remember a few strategic points. Being prepared is the utmost important part of any interview whether it is a telephone interview or face to face meeting. You may only have 10 – 15 minutes to sell yourself during a telephone interview and hopefully that will be enough to move forward for a face to face meeting. This is when you will really shine, if you are prepared.

Knowledge
Know the interviewer’s full name, correct pronunciation and his/her title, along with the exact time and location of the interview.

Research
Do some research on the interviewing company. Best place to start is the company’s website. It will be helpful to know how old the company is, what its products or services are, where its offices are located, and what its growth has been and what its growth potential is for the future. What are the daily tasks of the open position? Take notes on items you would like additional information on and ask the employer at the end of the interview. This will help you shine and stand out from the others and it also shows your interest in the company.

Ask Questions
Remember to ask questions that are relevant to the company and position for which you are interviewing.
Prepare the questions you will ask during the interview ahead of time. Remember that an interview is a "two-way street". The employer will try to determine through questioning if you have the qualifications necessary to do the job. You must determine through questioning whether the company will give you the opportunity for the growth and development you seek. Remember only ask questions that are relevant to the company and position for which you are interviewing. Some inquisitive questions you might ask…

  •  A detailed description of the position?
  •  Reason the position is available?
  •  Anticipated indoctrination and training program?
  •  Advanced training programs available for those who demonstrate outstanding ability?
  •  Earnings of those successful people in their third to fifth year?
  •  Company growth plans?
  •  The next step in the hiring process?

Dress for Success!
Mark Twain says it best “You only get one chance to make a first impression”. To ensure a great first impression it is best for men to dress in a dark-colored business suit, with a conservative tie, dark socks, shoes well shined and neat haircut. Women should dress in a tailored and conservative skirt suit. You should avoid wearing heavy cologne/perfume, excessive jewelry and flashy clothes. Personal hygiene is also important.
