How to Effectively Deal With Recruiters

Everyone needs three allies in their life – a good accountant to manage your money – a good doctor to manage your health and a good recruiter to manager your career. When dealing with your accountant and your doctor, there are certain elements you bring to the relationship that increases their abilities to manage your particulars. This holds true with your recruiter as well! A call from an executive recruiter will not be a nuisance or an imposition when treated professionally.

First and foremost, when establishing a strong working relationship with any recruiter the most direct way to do this is through open and honest communications. For example, if you are not interested in relocating to a new city, say so. If you are interested in a particular company, say so. If you have already interviewed with one or several other companies, say so.

Just as your doctor asks you specific questions to diagnosis your ailment, your recruiter will also ask you specific questions to qualify you for a particular opportunity. These questions would include but are not limited to, what are your current position responsibilities? Current growth potential/desires? Relocation options and salary requirements. Be direct and give honest answers. The answers you provide to your recruiter will determine how he/she will know which companies and opportunities would pique your interest. Allowing the doors to open to a new career of a lifetime.

Secondly, do not mistake a professional recruiter with a resume factory. The differences are astounding. A resume factory will simply send a stack of resumes to companies and sits back waiting for a call. In contrast, an executive recruiter is involved in the hiring process from the initial recruitment phone call, through the entire interview process, through the offer negotiation, acceptance of the offer, resignation and finally concluding upon the start of employment with the Client.
